Cyber Hate Speech on social media: Sentiment Analysis in Cuenca, Ecuador

On June 12, 2019, Ecuador passed the Same-Sex Marriage Act. At Kaleidos’ PRIDE lab, we are tracking the public backlash against the LGBTQ community following this law through the analysis of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). In this project, we are collaborating with “Sin Etiquetas,” the first LGBTQ radio program of Cuenca, which contributes valuable data as well as key insights into public discourses both in favor and against LGBTQ rights.

The interdisciplinary projects carried out by PRIDE lab utilize big data, as well as ethnographic engagement with the community of Cuenca, Ecuador, to analyze public discourses on LGBTQ issues. We intend to publish our findings in academic papers, educational comic books, and art exhibitions in an effort to reach populations that are interested in LGBTQ issues but are outside of academic circles.
