4S 2022 Open STS Data: Opportunities for Pedagogy, Reuse, Re-interpretation

As the open access journal for the Society for Social Studies of Science, the editorial collective of Engaging Science, Technology, and Society has been exploring the possibilities of “open” in the context of scholarly work. We believe there are many possible benefits for the STS community from some form of data sharing. Data sharing may create: an archive of work in the discipline; greater recognition of diverse contributions to scholarly research; opportunities for new insights; and pedagogical opportunities. In this workshop, we are interested in reviewing data that ESTS has and will be publishing and beginning to imagine how such materials might be re-used, taken up, re-interpreted. What additional supporting infrastructures might be needed to do so?

Those interested in exploring first-hand the potentialities of shared data are welcome to join this interactive workshop to be hosted at the December 2022 annual 4S conference. Workshop participants will gain greater insight into ethical and professional practices of sharing data, as well as challenges, practicalities and considerations for author sharing of data. We hope participants will leave with ideas for how they might apply these learnings to their own research and publication practices.
