Within the first several weeks I wanted to tie depictions of what engineerings are "supposed to do" related to the NAE Grand Challenges as manifesting within particular political and cultural context. Students read the Grand Challenges http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/challenges.aspx and were asked to think about which of these challenges the skills they had been developing as undergraduates most aligned to. We then looked at Gary Downey's consideration for Global Engineering Cultures as a way of thinking about the formation of engineering aligning with political economic shifts.
