Written by Margaret Mead and Rhoda Metraux in 1957 for Science for a commissioned study by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to understand how high school students think about the figure of the scientist. Mike Fortun pointed me to this article.
Aside from a choice research design that asks young women if they would like to marry a scientist (I am curious what would happen in someone asked that question today; people discuss it informally in any case), there's a telling footnote about Chinese high school science teachers fleeing from small town America to bigger cities "where he has friends or can live anonymously".
Another footnote turned me on to the AAAS' Traveling High-School Science Library Program.
