Critical Commentary

12-page document written by an ad-hoc committee of students for Eductional Reform at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1968 to call for fundamental campus reforms. It opens with this paragraph: "The American university is an anachronism. It no longer meets the needs of today's students as they struggle for self-identity amidst the confusion  and complexity of our world. It has failed to meet the demands and the challenges of a society struggling to deal with the realities of the twentieth Century--war, racism, illiteracy, nuclear power, and population growth." The students were all part of a 1967 seminar taught by Bruce Hicks, DSS 292: Interdisciplinary Analysis of Social Issues. Many were part of the student body who lobbied for the first 1968 Heuristics classes taught under the BCL, which adopted a decentralized, bottom-up approach to pedagogy. This document came be known as an "Education Reform Manifesto" after several news articles in the campus newspaper, The Daily Illini, covered its release and circulation.

Shared by Paul Schroeder, an Univerity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign student who was part of a Fall 1967 seminar, 'Interdisciplinary Analysis of Social Issues' (Prof. Bruce Hicks, DSS 292). Several students continued to discuss issues of educational reform into the spring of 1968. Their initiative was joined by several dozen campus leaders, including members of the Student Senate and other campus activists. Their collaboration created this document as a basis for advocating fundamental change within the university.

Paul Schroeder's archives are now part of the Univerity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Library Archives.
