Critical Commentary

This is the moment I got my first set of binoculares (or "binos"). It is common for the organizers of the pajareadas to carry an extra set of equipment when they know they will be accompanied by beginners or occasional birders. Before this day I had not used binoculars because I was dedicated to observing people, not birds. This time I decided to try to also record the experience of birding. The “binos” I was given are compact, and, according to my scarce knowledge, of the "Roof" type.

Tatiana, mi mentor, handed me the extra binos she carried, "this was the first set I owned", she explained. The difference between using binos and trying to watch and identify a bird using a camera is astounding. If this were a structural analysis of the tale (a la Propp), we would identify this as the first function of the donor: The "hero" encounters a magical agent or helper on their path and receives a magical tool.

At the end of the pajareada I tryed to return the binos to Tatiana, but she told me to keep them, "At least until you get your own".
