Usha Raman is Professor, Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad. Her research interests include cultural studies of science, health communication, children's media, feminist media studies, and the social and cultural impact of digital media. Before joining the University, she headed the communications department at L V Prasad Eye Institute. She has written for the popular press on topics related to health, technology, women’s issues, education and digital culture. Her writing has appeared in The Indian Express, Caravan, Deccan Chronicle and the Times of India. She currently is a columnist for The Hindu, and edits a monthly magazine for school teachers, called Teacher Plus. Usha received her doctorate in mass communication from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, USA, in 1996. She has been a visiting fellow at the University of Sydney (Australia), MIT (USA) and University of Bremen (Germany). Most recently, her work has focused on civic engagement and digital social networks, and feminist digital methodologies. Apart from several book chapters and journal articles on her core research areas, her publications include “Writing for the Media” (Oxford University Press), a volume of poetry entitled “All the spaces in between” (Writers Workshop) and a children’s book “Under the Bed” (Spark India).
