Critical Commentary
Robin Williams plays the exuberant, sharp, and kind teacher John Keating in Dead Poets Society (1989) who wants bored high school students to seize the day by introducing them to the pleasures of poetry. The setting is an all-boys private prep boarding school in Vermont. The plot thickens with the discovery of a defunct poetry club and sexist school administrators who have always throttled creativity at the sake of efficiency. Robin Willaims is a capable captain of his poetry pedagogical ship and sails the students towards self-determination. In doing so, he portrays Keating as a teacher devoted to the mission of teaching above all else.
