Critical Commentary

AO: This table by Walford (1982) and republished in Mnjama (2003) outlines the distribution of staff during the "golden age of the Kenya National Archives" under Kagombe. It gives us a sense of the third Chief Archivist (who served from 1974-1981), Dr. Maina Kagombe's expansive view of what the National Archives might include. Kagombe was critiqued for over-extending the mandate of the National Archives and incorporating a wide range of non-archival functions (Mnjama 2003).
