Inception of Biochemical Research Center (BERC) as collaboration between IIT Delhi and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (now ZTH, Zurich).
a collaborative initiative between the chemical engineering department, IIT Delhi and SFIT, Zurich. BERC was conceptualised as a research centre has a research focus on biochemical researches as The collaboration between SFIT, Zurich and BERC, IIT Delhi was one of the first experiences between two institutions having full-fledged cooperation for the research and training in the area of biochemical engineering. Establishment of BERC was a significant event in terms of its connectivity with the ‘West’. Beyond connectivity, BERC was one of the only centres in the country, which was purely driven by the research focus in the fields of biochemical Engineering. Bio-fuels, synthetic natural gas (SNG), hydrogen fuel cell and single-cell protein from bioconversion were few of the principal research focus of the centre. This collaboration between SFIT, Zurich and IIT Delhi lasted for ten years, till 1984.
