EY. Pedagogies of engagement

Emily York: This research sketchbook is a striking examplar of engagement as pedagogy and pedagogy as engagement. Here, I'm seeing engagement as pedagogy in that the students are clearly learning by exploring specific case studies, examining local governments, conducting interviews, and doing research that is engaged in the community and that engages environmental injustice. But it seems to me that this engaged learning experience is made possible by regarding pedagogy as a form of engagement--in other words, the level of effort that went into developing the scaffolding and setting up this learning opportunity for the students reflects not only a sustained and committed attention to creating a transformational learning experience, but an approach to teaching and learning that sees pedagogy itself as an opportunity to engage students and communities in critical STS practice and that resists the static boundaries of the classroom as where teaching and learning happen.
