ESSAY META-NARRATIVE

Text

Five years ago, a group of scientists coming from disciplines such as marine biology, oceanography, and chemistry embarked on the task of developing an ocean acidification research enterprise.  The project was spearheaded by two marine biologists who founded the Equatorial Biome & Ocean Acidification lab (EBIOAC) in 2014. EBIOAC is a research group currently based at the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí, a public university in the coastal city of Manta. Currently, their main research lab is the EBIOAC mesocosm – a facility that simulates ocean acidification conditions based on current patterns of CO2 emissions in order to evaluate the responses of marine organisms, particularly key native species.
