This video and the related power point presentations in English and Spanish present the notion of socio-technical change. The data complements the paper named “Innovation doesn’t work. The explanatory power of a socio-technical approach”, published in ESTS Journal. The discussion (in the video and in the paper) is presented in terms of a problem-solution relationship, linking two questions presented in the ESTS thematic collection: When it comes to engaging with and acting upon socio-technical change, is ‘innovation’ part of the solution or of the problem? And, what new conceptual and empirical resources can STS bring to the study of innovation? The “problematic side” (the first question) of our argument is focused in the theoretical constrains of “innovation” as analytical concept. Then, from the “solution side” (the second question), we introduce one definition of socio-technical change developed after almost 20 years of theoretical and empirical analysis. The Interactive Socio-cognitive Model is presented as an explanatory framework to deploy the notion of socio-technical change in order to make explicit the explanatory (and programmatic) advantages that this notion has.
