Critical Commentary

This essay by the founding editor of Engineering Studies, Gary Downey, articulates his vision for the journal as producing "scalable" scholarship. Drawing on the Italian political theorist Antonio Gramsci, a key goal that Downey identifies for Engineering Studies is to expand the range of activities that would count as scholarship (teaching, serving on advisory committees, making presentations to engineers etc.), a mode of engagement that he has come to label as "critical participation."
