Critical Commentary

This essay traces the emergence of Disaster-STS, a sub-field within STS focused on risk and disaster with close ties the engineering studies. Training its attention to concepts in the engineering toolkit such as risk and cost-benefit analysis, the author argues that Disaster-STS opens up previously black-boxed ideas such as codes, standards, and risk-management to critical analysis. Disaster-STS, the author argues, facilitates an understanding of failure as a "designed in" aspect of systems building.
