Critical Commentary

This essay examines the motivations for and implications of transnational movement of engineering students and early career professionals between India and the United States. In this multi-ethnography, the author situates such mobility at the intersection of multiple factors at different scales: including imaginations of successful careers and lifestyles as well as frustrations with state-sponsored higher education in India – factors which, in turn, are themselves located within particular histories of (post)colonialism, developmentalism, and more recently, neoliberalism.
