Critical Commentary

In order to obtain more information about participants, presentations, events, and topics of the community, we decided to construct a database using the abstract books and related data from the five annual events organized by the network.

We used the published books available for some of the events, available on the official website of the network. However, we required more information from the event and panel organizers. We also had to focus on the data that could be collected and inferred from all events, which not always followed the exact same details formats.

All the information on presentations and authors was transferred to an excel spreadsheet, including the information about the events (year, location); about the presentations (title, abstract, panel or group); and authors (name, the order of mention, and principal institutional affiliation).

We inferred additional information using this data, and additional information searched on the web or contact the organizers. The gender information was inferred from the social names, which the authors used for the registration. Therefore, no additional identification of gender was able to be identified in this data. The international and regional affiliation was extracted from the first

The data will be opened for public used after the 4S-Sydney event for further studies and interests of the STS community. Furthermore, a future content analysis will be provided in next versions of this work. Future recommendations for metadata collection for future events registrations will be provided to CTS-Chile organizers. Hopefully, the information collected in this exhibition will inspire future efforts of monitoring the network composition and distribution.
